3 Oct. 2010 - Amos 7:1-9

Amos 7:1-9
"Locusts, Fire and a Plumb Line"

In this passage Amos speaks about a vision he had from God. God showed him first a plague of locusts (v1) striking Israel and second a fire consuming Israel (v 4). To both of these images Amos cried out to the Lord (v 2,5) in an appeal for, if not mercy, pity, but not using the covenant God made with Israel, for Israel had broken the covenant. God, in both visions relented (v 3,6), but note that he did not forgive Israel for their transgressions. Then Amos was shown a third image, that of a plumb line being held to a perfectly straight wall and the Lord then said that he was going to set a plumb line amongst Israel (v 7,8). Verse 9 ends the passage off with God speaking out against Israel and about Israel's destruction and then he mentions king Jeroboam II* specifically by name as a target for His wrath (v 9).

Again, Amos speaks out about Israel's "straw that broke the camel's back" as they spiraled deeper and deeper into sin.

*Jeroboam II was regarded as a great king in the worldly sense but when it came to what mattered to God, he failed epically...
