22 Oct. 2010 - Zechariah 2:1-13

Zechariah 2:1-13
"a man with a measuring line"

This passage is an awesome passage. Zechariah sees a man with a measuring line going to measure the walls of Jerusalem. The angel accompanying zechariah tells him to go, chase after the man and tell him that jerusalem will have no walls - it will be that big and full of livestock and people. instead, the Lord will be its wall, its defense. God then calls to all the israelites in exile to flee babylon and return to judah for the Lord will bring judgement on judah.

Zechariah then prophesies an image of the end: God living in Jerusalem amongst His people, ruling over the land. his people will not only be the israelites, but every nation - that is what the Lord states through zechariah, a good few hundred years before Jesus was born and began teaching. prophecies of all nations being god's people have been around before Christ's sacrifice... that's pretty mindblowing...

Yet again, we see an immediate image of God's mercy, but this time there is a bonus. We also get to see an image of God's grace through Christ's sacrifice. again,  note that this grace for all nations is not derived from background knowledge of the NT, but directly from the OT prophecy itself. isn't that cool?
